Plans for new facilities at Norwich City's football complex The Nest have received planning approval.

The community hub, which is home to the Canaries' women's team and a host of Community Sports Foundation activities, will see a fenced-off 3G pitch installed along with floodlights.

The car park and access roads on the site, on the edge of Hellesdon, will also be extended within the complex.

Plans for the all-weather pitch, which will double as a training area, were submitted to Broadland District Council in January and were approved earlier this month.

According to plans, the pitch will be able to be used for 11-a-side matches as well as nine-a-side, seven-a-side and five-a-side games.

A statement in the application read: "The provision of a new artificial grass (AGP) pitch will provide increased usage in comparison to the existing grassed pitch for benefit of the community, partner organisations and sports clubs and in the surrounding area, via pre-arranged and structured access.

"The new AGP will offer a variety of football pitches and training areas within the same enclosed playing space to support development plans into grassroots football.

"In accordance with the FA's current technical guidance, the aspiration is to introduce multiple pitch markings to gain the maximum football developmental outcomes and benefit from the site footprint."

The application said the pitch would be built to Fifa quality standards.

Plans received strong support from those in the area, with one member of the public saying the new plans would have a "positive impact" on the community and help many local sports clubs.

Work on the new pitch must begin within three years according to those who approved the plans.

Opening in 2018, the site currently boasts seven pitches, residential bunk boxes, a cafe and a conference centre across the 22-acre site which was formerly home to Anglian Windows Sports and Social Club until a major fundraising campaign brought the rejuvenation of the derelict site.
