Cromer Pier has been voted as the second-best pier in the country for the third year running.

The 122-year-old Grade II-listed pier received national recognition in the National Piers Society’s annual Year of the Pier Award – having previously won the award twice, most recently in 2015.

The pier was described as a “firm favourite” among society members but missed out on the top spot to Southend Pier.

Brighton Palace Pier completed the podium of the nation’s favourite piers.

Deb Lewis, Cromer Pier’s sales and marketing manager, said: “I think the National Pier Society like to see the piers coming up with diverse, interesting, eclectic ways of using the space in terms of business, which I think is why we’ve come second because we’re always trying to evolve.

“They like to see that piers are in good hands in terms of taking them forward into the future – bringing diversity and coming up with new ideas.”

Cromer Pier's Pavilion Theatre was recently reopened following a £300,000 renovation. The Pavilion is one of only five functioning pier theatres in the country.

A reopening ceremony took place in March, which showcased the bar’s new lighter colour scheme, wider staff area and bespoke, handmade wood furniture.

The renovation of the North Norfolk District Council-owned venue also features new wheelchair-accessible toilets on the same side as the bar’s accessible entrance, and improved baby changing facilities.

National Piers Society spokesperson said: “We applaud the continuing investment to ensure the long-term future of this cherished Norfolk pier."

Ms Lewis added: “We’re very fortunate to have continued investment from North Norfolk District Council into the pier’s future, which enables us to plan ahead into what we want to achieve here and bring to the people of Cromer and surrounding areas."
