Norfolk's most up-and-coming town is about to get a new addition to its already-thriving food scene.

Work is underway to open Blind Pig, a wine bar and bistro, by the start of the summer in Aylsham following a significant refurbishment of the Red Lion Street property.

The business is being launched by couple Sean and Dana Portass, who have over 20 years of experience in the hospitality trade, having run a large portfolio of restaurants, pubs and hotels.

Mrs Portass said: "Aylsham has recently been voted one of the best places to live in the country and we truly believe a big part of what makes it great is the many hospitality venues it has.

"We really hope that our bistro will complement them all and become another asset to this wonderful town.

"We can't wait to welcome everyone soon."

The name Blind Pig is a homage to the former café, Piggy's, that once resided in the building and also harks back to the prohibition days in 1920s America where the name was associated with illicit drinking dens.

The pair moved to Norfolk a few years ago after a health scare made them decide to scale back their business ventures to take up semi-retirement from "hectic" life in the hospitality trade in Lincolnshire.

Mr Portass added: "I became extremely poorly and was in hospital for a long time after developing a blood clot between my heart and lung. Afterwards, we vowed to make the jump and move to north Norfolk, which has long been a dream of ours.

"We hope to create a cosy and relaxed atmosphere with a small seasonal menu and also Sunday roast dinners.

"It will be somewhere for people to be able to come and enjoy a nice meal or just a glass of wine or two with some nibbles."

Blind Pig plans to open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 11pm.
