Hunstanton Soapbox Derby returns to the resort on Sunday.

Some 40 home-made karts of all shapes and sizes will race through the streets cheered on by the crowds.

Vehicles can be viewed in the pit area on the Upper Green from around 10am, with racing set to start at 11.30am.

Karts will be displayed on The Green from 10am. Martin Chisholm, assistant director at organisers West Norfolk council, said: “Unlike Formula One where the fans are some distance away from the pits and cars, our spectators can get up close to view these unique vehicles before the racing begins.

“Although there are no engines involved in these karts, the combination of a push start and downhill course will generate some rapid racing. I would like to thank the team from the borough council who will turn Hunstanton into a street racing circuit.

"I wish the competing teams all the best and hope everyone enjoys the event.”

The straw bale-lined course begins on Greevegate near the High Street, where teams will give their kart a good old push to get things rolling.

They'll hit full speed as they race down The Green, where drivers have a slalom and ramp to contend with, before they turn onto the finishing straight on Cliff Parade.

Racers get two attempts at the course, with the winner being the kart which completes it in the shortest time.

There will also be a concours d'elegance for the best-looking machine.

Teams taking part include the town's RNLI station, whose chairman Charles le Strange Meakin hopes to raise the £3,000 cost of a single launch for its lifeboat or hovercraft.
