An RAF fighter jet was forced to return to base after it experienced technical issues during a training exercise in Norfolk this afternoon.

The aircraft - an F-35A Lightning worth up to £85m - could be seen heading back to land at Marham airbase after it flew over the north Norfolk coast at around 2pm.

An RAF spokesman said: "An F-35 Lightning from RAF Marham on a routine training sortie had a technical issue leading to a precautionary return to base.

"The aircraft landed safely and the pilot is fine."
