A Norfolk man was arrested after violent clashes between supporters following Southampton's Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 24-year-old from Kings Lynn was among 10 people arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and other associated offences following the match on Saturday.

Police were called to reports that a number of people were involved in disorder, with tables, chairs and glasses being thrown, as well as a man being assaulted close to St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.

A 61-year-old man suffered facial injuries and needed hospital treatment.

The others arrested range in age from 19 to 33 and come from London, Hertfordshire, Bournemouth and Southampton.

Detective Inspector Tim Judd, of Hampshire police, said: “This would have been a frightening experience for those who witnessed this incident.

“There would have been a lot of people out and about in the area enjoying their Saturday evening who suddenly found themselves at the centre of this disorder.

“We believe those involved had been to the Southampton versus Tottenham game and were making their way out of the city when the incident occurred.”
