Staff at the region's largest hospital are facing a financial hit after bosses hiked parking fees for workers by a third.

From May, most workers at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital will be required to pay 33pc more to park on-site - with just the lowest earners spared from the increase.

It is part of a shake-up of parking at the hospital which has seen bosses lease hundreds of extra spaces for its staff.

And this cost is being passed on to its staff, with the increase in charges made to bankroll the purchases.

Currently, staff pay either £30, £24 or £12 per month, depending on their pay grade.

But under the changes, those paying £30 will pay £40 and those paying £24 will pay £32.

Staff currently earning less than £21,318 will continue to pay £12 per month.

Paul Jones, chief people officer at NNUH, said: "Having listened carefully to our staff about travel to work and car parking issues, we are putting in changes from May 1.

"This includes an additional 481 car parking spaces on-site, 12 more at Rouen Road and 100 more on the Triangle sites, which we have had to lease from third parties.

"We have a firm commitment to prioritising our staff who work long shifts regardless of how far they have to travel.

"We have worked with staff representatives to create a much fairer set of criteria for parking on site.

"We have had to increase our parking charges for all but our lowest-paid workers to cover the cost of the additional parking, and we recognise that this will be disappointing.

"We have a simple appeals process for anyone who does not agree with the changes."

During the pandemic, workers were offered free parking, however, this ended in March 2022
