A school has been given planning permission for three temporary buildings after part of its ceiling collapsed forcing the closure of classrooms.

Marshland High School on the outskirts of Wisbech applied to site three Portakabins on part of its playgrounds.

It said they were needed while repairs are carried out to one of the buildings on its site at West Walton.

In a planning statement, Portakabin said: "The proposed temporary Portakabin buildings will be used as essential decant classrooms whilst works are completed in the main English building.

"On October 7 a portion of the ceiling material fell in one of the lower floor English classrooms.

"After further investigation by a structural engineer the school was advised to close the building affected which consists of two floors with two classrooms on the lower floor and four on the upper floor.

"Due to the number of students who attend the school there is insufficient space within the remaining buildings to allow effective timetabling of lessons."

West Norfolk Academies Trust, which runs the 700-pupil school, has been given temporary planning permission for six months by West Norfolk Council.
