A 17-year-old dog rescued from a Romanian shelter is looking for a happy home to spend the rest of his life.

Azorel, a crossbreed, was brought to England by the charity Safe Rescue for Dogs and is currently being fostered in Norwich.

He was one of around 300 dogs living at the shelter in Romania where staff “do their best” but struggle with the number of dogs in their care.

Kelly Hare, director of Safe Rescue for Dogs, said: "Azorel really stood out, he's 17 and belonged to the brother of the woman who ran the shelter.

"I thought to myself, whatever time he's got left it shouldn't end in there.

“Nothing really phases him, he can hold his own and he's just happy like other dogs.

“He takes everything in his stride and wants to be spoilt rotten even if he's got a month or a year left."

Ms Hare has a lengthy background in animal rescue and worked at the RSPCA before founding her first charity - The Oldies Club - which focuses on helping elderly dogs.

Safe Rescue for Dogs operates from Norfolk but works with adoptee families and fosterers nationwide.

Each year Ms Hare and her partner take several trips to Romania to visit shelters that may be particularly overcrowded and assess the dogs they can bring back to the UK.

The charity does not keep dogs in kennels and instead uses fosterers to keep pooches in a home environment while they are waiting to be adopted.

If you would like to adopt Azorel or one of the other dogs in the care of Safe Rescue for Dogs you can do so by contacting the charity on 07888 251197 or emailing saferescue@hotmail.co.uk.
