A popular farm shop and restaurant has got the green light for a new garden centre.

Worzals has been given planning permission to expand its business on the outskirts of Wisbech.

It said in a planning statement: "This proposal comprises of the replacement and upgrade of the existing garden centre element and the erection of a garden centre with café area, glass houses, external garden centre and crazy golf to compliment the existing leisure use approved.

"This expansion clearly demonstrates the success and commitment of Worzals, which as a result makes significant positive social and economic contributions to the town of Wisbech and neighbouring villages."

Worzals has grown rapidly since it was launched by the Curson family on Lynn Road, near the A47 roundabout, in 2010.

Its website says: "Our passion is showcasing the fantastic produce that our local area has to offer - everything from local jam to award-winning beef."

In 2018, it was given planning permission for the region's biggest play barn.

But the planning statement added: "Due to the current pandemic and uncertainty around opening leisure uses, particularly play barns, Worzals have adapted their business plan and are building on the success of the garden centre and bringing this development forwards earlier than planned within the business strategy."

Last Halloween, it recreated iconic film and TV sets for its indoor pumpkin patch.

Worzals says its site offers "space and facilities that Wisbech town centre simply cannot".

Its statement added: "This proposal will not only build upon the success of the existing offering it will also underpin it and ensure the continued success and positive impact of Worzals on the local area."

Wisbech Town Council supported its latest application. West Walton Parish Council said it had no objections.

It was given the go-ahead by West Norfolk council officers under delegated powers.
