Aldi has submitted plans for the demolition of a factory to make way for a new south Norfolk store.

An application has been lodged with the district council and if approved will see a new supermarket built at the site of the former Norfolk Feather Company in Diss.

It comes after the factory fell into liquidation and closed its doors back in October

The luxury bedding firm supplied customers including Harrods, and could trace its roots back 90 years.

Eastern Daily Press:

Under the new plans, the factory would be demolished and the 5.2 acre site would see 2.6 acres dedicated to the new Aldi store, 102 car parking spaces and a new access road.

The other 2.6 acres "will remain for future development by others".

The supermarket chain has operated out of its nearby Mere Street location for almost 10 years and says its decision to move comes from ongoing operational restraints, as well as its lease ending in 2025.

According to Aldi, in documents online, some of the existing factory buildings are of an age where various forms of asbestos are present and a full survey will need to be undertaken prior to demolition.

Specialist contractors will undertake the controlled removal of identified asbestos before
general demolition works are undertaken.
