A family in a Norfolk village is using its impressive Christmas illuminations to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Deanne and Craig Royall started switching on the lights on November 1, and they say they "take joy from the smiles" the display brings to the children who attend the neighbouring school.

Mrs Royall said: “It brings my husband and I so much joy from the smiles of the school children as they eagerly come and glimpse our display.

“It is so lovely to see.

“But it isn’t just children who keenly come to look, we have cars pulling up, walkers too who stop and admire.”

Mrs Royall said the cost-of-living crisis had not deterred the display, because they considered it their way of "giving back" and sharing happiness.

She said: “This year my husband has said that it costs us about £10 a night to have the display on.

“It is very expensive, we are struggling as it is, but in these tough times, we see this is our way of giving a little back.

"So the more donations we receive make the cause worthwhile.

“We have a Facebook page where we keep people up to date with proceedings.”

The couple first started with a small lights display in 2011, but Mrs Royall said that since then her husband had gone 'Christmas light crazy'.

"We have very slowly progressed more and more. My husband is Christmas lights crazy and the display from November keeps getting extended.

"Only since 2016 have we been raising money for charity.

“This year we are raising money for Cancer Research UK, we have a cash collection on our fence out the front of our house but some people have posted me money.

“Last year we tried to raise money for the Norfolk Air Ambulance, and nobody really donated so we are back with Cancer Research as people care about this charity."
