Firefighters from Norfolk joined a huge rally to mark the start of a ballot which could see them strike in a dispute over pay.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) travelled to Westminster for a demonstration and lobby of MPs, joining 1,800 firefighters from across the country.

Firefighters and control staff have rejected a 5pc pay offer and started voting on industrial action on Monday. The result is due in the new year.

The FBU said Tuesday's (December 6) rally was aimed at persuading MPs to fund the fire and rescue service to support fair pay for firefighters and control staff and to end cuts to the service.

Hundreds of firefighters and control staff gathered outside Parliament before lobbying their MPs.

Ryan Hastings, Norfolk FBU branch secretary, said he had met Norwich South MP Clive Lewis to discuss the "insulting" pay offer.

Setting firefighter pay is the responsibility of employers, including the county council, working through the National Joint Council.

The government provides funding for councils to run fire services.

Norfolk County Council runs Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and the authority has said it would consider ways to provide emergency cover if the strike action happens.
