The woman behind a book shop which has been open for more than 30 years said its closure will be a "huge loss" for the village.

Whitehouse Books has come to its final chapter in Burnham Market.

The business, in Market Place, will officially close its doors on January 7, as the building is set to go up for sale.

Whitehouse Books was originally opened by John and David Crombie but in 2007 the shop was taken over by Kate Bennett.

The 71-year-old said she will be sad to see it close but the decision is out of her hands.

"I have traded as an independent bookshop for 16 years," said Ms Bennett. "Before that, my landlords John and David Crombie, who founded the bookshop, ran the business for 14 years.

"John and David were both retired solicitors. I too am a retired solicitor and have always loved books so when the opportunity came up to take over the shop I couldn't let it pass me by.

"Sadly David died four years ago and following John's death earlier this year, the property is now being sold and I have been asked to vacate."

From history and biographies to classical fiction and children's books, the quaint independent has a vast array on offer.

It also caters for tourists visiting the village with maps, walking and bird books.

But Ms Bennett said the bookshop had also become a little hub for the community, with locals regularly popping in.

She said: "For those who live in the area, I think they will miss the shop.

"But also the people who visit - there are many with holiday homes in the surrounding areas.

"People regularly pop in and they say to me 'I hope you never close'.

"But now there will be a void in the village that will be difficult to fill."

The bookshop's closing down sale will start from Monday, December 12.

Ms Bennett added: "I feel privileged and very lucky that I had the opportunity to run this shop for 16 years.

"I am sad, but when one chapter ends another begins.

"I just want to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years."
