With sub-zero temperatures set to hit Norfolk, some households could be eligible for a cash boost from the government

The Cold Weather Payment scheme is available to those who are entitled to one of five benefits during times of exceptional weather.

This would mean that the average temperature at a location is recorded at 0C or below for seven consecutive days.

Those eligible get £25 for each seven-day period of very cold weather between November 1 and March 31, 2023.

It comes as the Met Office has issued an amber alert for Norfolk ahead of a spell of 'severe' cold weather with temperatures to plummet below freezing.

The warning is in place from Wednesday, December 7, to Monday, December 12, with vulnerable people considered at risk.

Arctic winds will bring subzero temperatures to much of the country with widespread frost and possible lows of -7C in remote parts of Norfolk.

Am I eligible for the Cold Weather Payment?

The payment will be sent to those receiving the following benefits/support:

  • Pension credit
  • Income support
  • Income-based jobseeker’s allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Universal credit
  • Support for mortgage interest.

How can I claim this support?

There is no need to apply, for those who are eligible the payment will be sent automatically.

To check if you are eligible you can visit the gov.uk website

When will I receive the payment?

After each seven-day period of cold weather, the payment should be sent within 14 working days.

It is paid into the same bank or building society account as your benefit payments.

What if I don't receive the payment?

Tell the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus if you think that you should have received a Cold Weather Payment but you have not.

If you’re getting universal credit you can also call the helpline.
