A bridge in Thetford has been revealed as one of the most bashed in Britain.

Network Rail has revealed the railway bridges that are hit most often.

Abbey Farm bridge in Thetford was hit 15 times in the 12 months leading up to March 2022.

The road connecting Station Road and Mundford Road is just 7ft 3in high, meaning tall vehicles often get stuck underneath.

There has even been graffiti warning vans against using the road.

Whenever the bridge is hit it has to be inspected for structural damage causing delays to rail services in and out of the town.

Network Rail's chairman Sir Peter Hendy said: “Every incident can delay tens of thousands of passengers and create a huge cost from public funds.

“We urge drivers to properly plan their routes, know the height of their vehicles and be vigilant for road signs showing the height of bridges.

“Network Rail always looks to recover the entire repair and delay costs from the driver and the operator.”
