A rally has been held in Norwich as part of a global day of action to coincide with the COP27 United Nations global climate summit.

More than 300 people assembled outside City Hall at midday on Saturday, November 12 for the protest - one of a series held across the UK - before marching around the city centre march to the Forum.

Green party city councillor Gary Champion said at the demonstration: "We're in the midst of mass extinction and it seems that business as usual is the default position.

Eastern Daily Press:

"We need to act collectively and put real pressure on our politicians.

"If we don't act now we're going to be in a situation where we're going to have a complete societal breakdown.

Eastern Daily Press:

"The time to act is now."

Norwich South MP Clive Lewis said in his address to the crowd: "There are a lot of people struggling to make ends meet at the moment.

Eastern Daily Press:

"The cost of living crisis is the climate crisis. The two are not separate, they're interlinked.

"If you don't understand that, you're part of the problem.

Eastern Daily Press:

"It's important that we get across to people that the rise in the cost of food is all linked to the chaos that is ensuing - and it's only set to get worse.

"Don't lose hope, because if you lose hope there's no point in doing anything.

Eastern Daily Press:

"Don't lose hope, but understand the scale of the challenge before us.

"If you are going to tackle the climate crisis, you're going to have to tackle inequality.

Eastern Daily Press:

"The poor cannot give up what they don't consume."

Dr Sarah Eglington of Norwich Friends of the Earth said: "A crisis demands urgent action, and when I look at the action taken by our government and leaders across the world, it is in no way fit for a crisis.

Eastern Daily Press:

"When I look back a year ago to COP26, I was naively quite hopeful.

"There seemed there was an uprising of people calling for change.

Eastern Daily Press:

"But here we are, one year later, and what's different?

"Each and every one of us needs to rise up, today, and demand action."
