North Norfolk MP Duncan Baker was among Tory MPs who urged ministers to give pensioners an inflation-proof pay rise in the coming autumn statement.

Prime minister Rishi Sunak and chancellor Jeremy Hunt are mulling over whether to raise state pensions and benefits in line with inflation in the November 17 autumn budget.

In a Labour-led Commons debate, Mr Baker said the triple lock, temporarily suspended last year “really does matter”, with one in three of his constituents over the age of 65.

He said: "The prime minister has stood at the despatch box and he has said many times that he will protect the most vulnerable, he will be fair and he will be compassionate.

"So I do believe that in just nine days’ time the right decision, the moral and ethical decision, will be made, and that will be returned to the one in three constituents I represent in North Norfolk."

MPs voted 218 to zero in favour of Labour’s non-binding motion calling on the government to commit to maintaining the state pension triple lock, with former minister Sir Christopher Chope the only Conservative MP to vote in favour.
