It's good to talk when any relationship is under pressure and it seems to me that plenty of bridges need to be built between Posh and their fans after a difficult few months.

This season has clearly not worked out how everyone wanted – although let's not forget that we've still got a good chance of getting into the play-offs and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final – and there seems to be a growing tension between supporters and the club.

Owner Darragh MacAnthony rightly receives plaudits for communicating with fans via Twitter, but some of the abuse he has received recently has been nothing short of disgraceful. I have to believe that most of the vile tweets aren't from true Posh fans, but we should all be concerned that a man who lifted the club from the doldrums is receiving such abuse.

Meanwhile, plenty of fans using social media have turned their fire on manager Darren Ferguson, laying the blame for the club's recent problems at the door of the Scotsman. His standing wasn't helped by his failure to answer questions from reporters immediately after the 5-4 capitulation at Oldham last weekend.

The fans haven't particularly turned their fire on Fergie at games, but the atmosphere in recent matches at London Road has certainly appeared tense, with supporters quickly showing their frustration when things go wrong.

It feels like the relationship between the club and its fans is at its lowest point since Darragh came to our rescue in 2006, and it's something that needs to be nipped in the bud.

Which is why I feel a public meeting between Posh's management and the fans should be organised at the earliest possible opportunity. I'm sure Q&A sessions featuring Darragh, Fergie and Barry Fry used to be a lot more commonplace, but I can't remember any such event been held in recent times.

Call me old fashioned, but I think it would be a healthy exercise to get club bosses and fans in the same room to enable a frank exchange of views to take place.

Social media has revolutionised the art of communication, and it's certainly entertaining to read Darragh's thoughts on Twitter, but you only receive snapshots of his views and too often people will use it as a way to spread abuse.

While most true Posh fans are still fully behind MacAnthony, we're not so naive to believe he gets every decision right and it would be good to have a proper debate about the direction the club is taking.

However, I truly believe that Darragh has the best interests of the club at heart and fans who are turning fire on him should consider what it was like before he took over.

Frankly, we were going nowhere, stuck in League Two and with little prospect of improvement. Since his arrival, we've celebrated three promotions, punched above our weight by surviving in the Championship, and brought in some great young players, who have gone on to earn Posh huge profits when they move on to bigger things.

The expectations of fans have rightly been raised by the recent successes, but it does amuse me that some people seem to think should win every game we play.

However, things certainly aren't right at the moment and Ferguson is understandably coming under increased scrutiny. Tactics such as the midfield diamond have come in for criticism and it would be interesting to hear Fergie's thoughts at a meeting with fans.

Sometimes it takes a good row to clear the air and I think a public meeting would be a good way to start the process of improving relations between the club and its fans.

Up the Posh!
