An annual golf day and gala dinner which raised money for cancer charity the Big C has taken on an extra poignancy this year after one of the participants died from the disease following the tournament.

Robert Cooper was among the 30 golfers who competed for the Petrob Trophy at Barnham Broom despite suffering from cancer, but the Norwich man lost his fight with the condition at the end of last month, aged 70.

This year, the golf day raised £7,000, which was £1,000 more than last year and double the previous year's effort. The event was only recently revived following a long hiatus by golfer Peter Corfield, who said that Mr Cooper's battle with cancer was the inspiration behind the decision to bring it back.

He added that future Petrob Trophy golf days would be held in memory of Mr Cooper, who fought cancer for four years.

Following the golf day, there was a gala dinner, award presentation and auction at Barnham Broom. The dinner event attracted 60 people.

Mr Corfield said: 'After he was diagnosed I decided to resurrect this tournament. He was the inspiration for bringing it back and putting the money towards Big C.'

He worked throughout the year getting various prizes from local companies and golf clubs for auction and raffle.

This culminated in the final golf day and gala dinner, which has raised £16,500 over the last three years.
