One reader is encouraging others to give up something they find addictive, but that others might think is normal behaviour.
The year 1918 was the year that Soviet Russia gave up tsars, and we all gave up the war to end all wars! Governments cannot change the world, but you can change yourself.
Try to give up something that is normal accepted behaviour for most people, which you have engaged in and enjoyed, but find a distraction. It needs to be behaviour that you feel is slightly addictive.
It needs to be something which you find morally suspect. It needs to be permanent, not just for Christmas or Lent.
Thus I gave up car driving at 22 — pollution, road deaths and climate change; and eating animals at 30 which was always about avoiding animal cruelty.
Next year I will tell you if I have succeeded in giving up something else that most of you take for granted. Why not try it for yourself, it's easier than you think.
