Plans have been submitted for 46 retirement homes on the site of a former social club in Harleston that was the subject of a failed bid to turn it into a community church.
Developers McCarthy & Stone propose building 40 retirement living apartments, four bungalows and two coach houses, as well as landscaped gardens and on-site car parking, on the land off Mendham Lane.
The site was formerly home to the Apollo Club, which hosted social events including wedding receptions, christening celebrations, wakes and parties, until it closed on New Year's Eve 2016.
The planning application submitted to South Norfolk Council follows a public exhibition to display the proposals to the wider public held last month.
Matt Wills, regional managing director of McCarthy and Stone, said: "The site is ideally located close to the town centre, and our plans would assist in meeting a growing need for housing for older people in Harleston."
Diss-based Hope Church, which holds weekly meetings in Harleston, had wanted to buy the former club to turn it into a permanent home in the town.
