A new tool for dating archaeological sites in Suffolk is being funded by Historic England, it has been revealed.

A report prepared for yesterday's Suffolk County Council meeting revealed that the new tool would create a 'type-series' for Anglo-Saxon, Medieval and later pottery found in Suffolk and Norfolk.

A 'type-series' is an archaeology resource that is used for dating sites where objects are found, and helps place finds in context in a particular area.

The report said: 'A Suffolk type series is urgently needed if the collections held are to be studied and interpreted effectively.

'The funding will enable the creation of a physical and accessible online type series for the county for use by both commercial and amateur groups.'

However, the amount of grant awarded by Historic England and the timeline for the scheme have not yet been disclosed.
