Former Labour Party leader Michael Foot has died at the age of 96, it has been announced today.
Mr Foot was leader of the party from 1980 to 1983 before standing down in the wake of an election defeat by Margaret Thatcher's Tories.
Mr Foot, also known as a prolific writer, was first elected to Parliament in 1945 and was an MP for 47 years.
Before becoming leader, Mr Foot served in the Jim Callaghan and Harold Wilson governments as Minister for Employment and Commons leader.
