A charity is urging Norfolk residents to join a campaign to double the number of native trees and woods in the UK as only 11 individuals andf groups have signed up so far.

The Woodland Trust has launched the 'Give it some Welly for Woodland' scheme to raise funds for its More Trees More Good initiative.

The campaign is being supported by celebrities including comedienne Sue Perkins and wildlife broadcaster Simon King.

So far, 1,000 people from across the country have pledged their support by holding events on March 4, when the Trust is inviting people from across the eastern region to wear wellies or hold a welly-themed event with family and friends. Funds raised will pay to create valuable habitats and protect the country's ancient woodland.

Mr King said: 'By planting native trees we are creating homes for so many of our native species of wildlife, so I would urge people across county to get involved and help the Trust raise money and do your bit to look after all creatures great and small.'
