A man who stepped in when a gang of youths were shouting abuse at girls in Brandon suffered multiple injuries after being beaten up.

The 47-year-old man, who does not want to be named, had been out with a friend in the town before the attack involving around seven youths, in Thetford Road. It left him with a broken arm and facial injuries.

They were on their way home at about 1am on May 28 and saw several young males loitering around, who said something abusive to some girls.

He said he told them to 'pack it in' and was beaten up. As well as the broken arm, he said he had a fairly deep cut to the head, black eyes and a boot print in his face.

He said: 'You have got to act on how you feel if you are going to intervene. There's always the chance this might happen or even worse, but if everyone was to stop intervening because they are worried about what might happen, it's not going to be a good situation.

'If you saw someone getting beaten up or if something was wrong, anybody would intervene, I think.'

The self-employed bricklayer said he would probably be off work for about six or seven weeks due to his broken arm, which would affect his income.

The group are youths said to be aged between 14 and 18. Anyone with any information should call PC Stuart Nunn at Mildenhall Police on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
