Families and business owners are calling for more road safety measures after a crash in Rackheath.

Three teenagers on bikes – part of a group of five cyclists – and two people in a Peugeot 206 were taken to hospital after the crash on the junction of Wroxham Road with Swash Lane at 9pm on Thursday night. One of the cyclists was kept in overnight for treatment.

The crash came as little surprise to local people, who have become used to seeing emergency vehicles en route to deal with accidents.

Steve Finney was the second person on the scene, as he was driving home to Wroxham from Norwich.

He helped to attend to some of the injured teenagers. He said: 'The vehicle went through the five lads, flipped over and ended up facing the other way in a field.'

Mr Finney said the teenagers were on their way home to Sprowston and that they told him they were meant to be sitting a GCSE exam the next day.

Jane and Roger Lebbell, of the nearby Manor Barn House bed and breakfast, said they had seen the group of boys cycling along Swash Lane, and then saw the aftermath of the crash.

The couple have been living there since 1984, and believe the road has become increasingly dangerous.

Mr Lebbell said: 'In the early days I used to walk my dogs down to the church from here, but it is just too dangerous and I can't walk down there now.'

Joanne Gosling, of Wroxham Road, said that her 12-and-14 year old children were still petrified after a car ploughed through their front garden two years ago.

'So many accidents have happened here. It makes them unsettled if they hear a bang at night-time.'

Chris Jennings, whose family own The Green Man pub, also said a lorry had crashed into their brick wall in the past. 'Cars tear around this corner. They put in a 50mph zone, but people don't really pay much attention to it.'

A spokesman for Norfolk Police confirmed that the crash is being investigated.
