THE head that was smashed off the wooden sculpture of a badger in Wisbech Park has been found – and it looks in good enough condition to be fixed back on.

It was discovered in bushes in the park at the end of last week by a member of Fenland District Council's staff.

Now a local business has come forward offering to pay for it to be repaired.

The offer has come from Darrel Else Furnishers, a family firm in Leverington Common, after Anne Else saw a report about the damage in the local press.

She phoned to say she would be willing to pay for any repair or, if that was not possible, for a replacement.

Her son Darran, who runs the company, said: 'My father died recently and we thought it would be a very nice thing to do in his memory. He would have liked that - he was very much an outdoors person and he always said that if he had his life again he'd be a gamekeeper.'

The Friends of Wisbech Park are now trying to arrange for the repair to be carried out.

Councillor Peter Murphy, FDC's portfolio holder responsible for the environment, said: 'We're delighted the head has been found. It looks as if it was dumped back in the park following all the publicity last week about the attack on it.

'I'd like to thank Mrs Else and her family for their extremely generous offer. We're very hopeful the badger can be restored and we're looking into that now, together with the Friends of Wisbech Park.'
