The chance to see cult film Quadrophenia on the big screen brought Norwich's Mods and their scooters out in their droves.

The classic British 1979 Mod film, named after an album by The Who, follows the life of Jimmy Cooper, played by Phil Daniels, who is disillusioned with his parents and job and joins a group of Mods. It was screened at Cinema City on Tuesday night as part of a Mark Kermode season and was followed with a Northern Soul after party.

Ian King, 46, who lives in Hethersett and is a member of the Norwich Mods Scooter Club, said: 'This is the first time we will all be together to watch it since it came out in 1979.

'It started a lot of us off in the mod scene after watching the film. It was the lifestyle and the music. It was a time when there were plenty of jobs and these young people had money to spend on smart clothing from Italy.'

Jon Goodrum, 45, from Old Catton, said: 'It's a classic British film and the music was essential.'

Michelle Green's impressive Sixties beehive meant she and Mally Rose, 53, from Horsham St Faith, could not travel by scooter to the screening, but both were decked out in their finest Mod gear. Mr Rose said: 'It's brilliant to have the party and to dress up. I have seen the film 100 times but there's nothing like seeing it on the big screen.' Photo: denise Bradley
