Concerned parents met with a Norfolk MP yesterday to discuss a crossing in their village which they claim leaves them 'dicing with death' every day.

South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss met with residents at the Isle Bridge Road crossing in Outwell, near Wisbech, yesterday afternoon.

The Conservative MP agreed to meet with villagers after concerns were raised about how dangerous it is for parents and their children to cross the A1101 by The Crown pub to get to the nearby primary school.

Some residents also told their MP they opt to travel to nearby Wisbech to post a letter rather than cross the road to visit their local post office.

Ms Truss said: 'I have tried to cross there before and thought it was dangerous but seeing parents trying to cross there after picking up their children from school really brought home just how dangerous it is.

'I have discussed this issue with the county council and I know there is a tight budget for highway improvements, but something really needs to be done with the amount of people who dice with death every day to cross here and the speeding traffic.'

Also present at yesterday's meeting were Outwell's borough councillors Chris Crofts and Harry Humphrey and Nigel George, from the Southern Area Road Safety Committee.

Parents have long complained about the cars and lorries which 'speed' through the village and the poor visibility at the crossing. A petition has also been signed by hundreds of people all urging Norfolk County Council to make the safer crossing.

But a county council spokesman said: 'This location does not have a history of accidents, and while we would like to do more, we regret that the substantial work involved to provide a pedestrian refuge adjacent to the bridge has led us to conclude that no further action should be taken at this time.'
