Charitable thrill-seekers have been urged to scale dizzying new fundraising heights by abseiling from the roof of one of Norwich's tallest buildings.

The descent from the 150ft Norfolk Tower on Surrey Street will give the plucky participants a spectacular view of the city while raising money for East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH).

Registration for the event begins today (Monday 16th) but, with only 60 places available, entries have been encouraged quickly in order to secure the chance to abseil from the prominent 11-storey office block on March 11.

It is hoped the event could raise more than 10,000 for the charity's work to support families and care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex.

Claire LeLievre, EACH Norfolk fundraiser, said: 'We're so excited about this event. It's in a great location, for a great cause, and should appeal to a wide audience; whether you're used to heights, fancy a new challenge, have a desire to support EACH or want to celebrate a special occasion.

'The views from the top of the tower are breathtaking. You'll get a rare bird's eye view of the city in the knowledge you are raising funds for a vital cause.'

Amanda Martin from East Harling is a care assistant at the EACH Quidenham hospice and has already signed up for the abseil and will celebrate her 40th birthday on the day of the event.

'EACH is such a fantastic cause, and the reason why I'm taking part,' she said. 'I'm petrified of heights, so I hope my family and friends appreciate this and sponsor me for my efforts.'

Property owners MAHB Capital have loaned the building free of charge for the first event of its kind to take place at the Norfolk Tower – the highest commercial building in Norwich.

MAHB director Matt Bartram said: 'We knew quite a bit about EACH and they are a great charity to be involved with, so when they called and said they had identified this building as being a good one for the event, we were pleased to give them permission.

'It is the highest commercial building in the city and the sunsets here are absolutely amazing. I have never abseiled from it before, but I think it will be quite daunting.'

The event, which is being managed by The Norfolk Army Cadet Force, will take place on Sunday, March 11 between 10am and 4pm. It costs 25 to register and participants will be asked to raise a minimum of 100 in sponsorship. Spaces are limited to 60 and will be issued on a 'first come, first served' basis.
