Youngsters at Mulbarton Junior School were given food for thought at a special assembly to mark Fairtrade Fortnight.

The Anglia Co-operative foodstore, in Cuckoofield Lane, gave all 172 pupils at the school a free Fairtrade banana and presented the school with a selection of products at an assembly.

The children learned all about how Fairtrade is helping millions of people in the Third World.

Store trainee manager Rhys Southgate, who was part of the Anglia Co-operative team delivering the assembly, said: 'We showed the children how other children in the world aren't as fortunate and wouldn't have some of the things that we take for granted – like schools, hospitals and fresh water – without the help of Fairtrade.'

'Through Fairtrade farmers receive fair prices for their products, workers receive a fair wage and their communities are given money to help provide things like hospitals, clinics, schools and fresh water.

'It's Fairtrade only now as far as bananas are concerned at our store, so we thought it fitting that we should give one to each pupil as part of the assembly.'
