Millions of viewers watched Sprowston singer Bill Downs crash out of TV show The Voice last night, but it was still a happy ending for the the musician - his exit meant he got to tie the knot with his childhood sweetheart.

The 24-year-old was on the team of The Script singer Danny O'Donoghue on the popular BBC talent show, but found himself pitted against Londoner Max Milner on yesterday evening's show.

The pair were given Beggin' by Madcon to sing and wowed all judges, including Jessie J, Sir Tom Jones and will.i.am.

But, to the disappointment of former Sprowston High School pupil Bill, his mentor decided it was Max who would go through to the next round - the live finals.

The Script star said: 'The UK's looking at me thinking I'm an idiot for putting them together and it was a stupid thing to do.'

He said: 'Max, I have seen a spark in you but in rehearsals I saw how much Bill has come on which is why it's such a hard decision.'

However, he plumped for Max, leaving Bill to reflect: 'It's been incredible for me, this is the second time I've sung without my guitar. It's been amazing.'

On social networking site Twitter, Bill tweeted: 'Thank you for all your positive comments, and hello to all my new followers. Needless to say I was gutted with the decision. Life goes on...' He then added: 'And on the plus side, I GOT MARRIED YESTERDAY!!!!!!!! To the most beautiful bride in the world. x x x'

That was because, with the show recorded in advance, Bill finally got the chance to tie the knot with his childhood sweetheart.

Before he got the chance to compete in the top-rated show, Bill had been due to marry his fiancee Sacha Cullum and his wife-to-be agreed to put the champagne on ice to give him his shot at stardom.

The pair managed to re-book the church and reception venue after his early exit and the big day went ahead as scheduled yesterday.

Bill and his beauty therapist wife Sacha, 23, have been together since they were teenagers.

The new Mrs Downs tweeted: 'Yesterday was the most amazing and perfect day of my life...I married my soul mate. I couldn't be happier!!!'

Bill's appearance on The Voice saw him join a growing list of singers from our city finding success on the national stage.

Spixworth teenager, Sam Kelly, who also went to Sprowston High, found fame on Britain's Got Talent, while Norwich band Lost? recently supported McFly at the University of East Anglia's LCR.
