The world's tallest free-standing mountain is set to be tackled by a Norwich fundraiser later this year, as she attempts to raise 2,500 for the Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF).

Laura-Jane Ryves, from Eaton, is taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, Africa, in August.

The 22-year-old, who is currently studying English and American literature at the University of Kent, will brave the heights of Kilimanjaro during a six-day trek run by Student Adventures.

The mountain's peak stands at 5,895m and the risks of altitude sickness are high for even experienced climbers.

Laura-Jane, a former Earlham High School pupil, said: 'Coming from Norfolk, where one might be hard-pressed to find a slight hill, training to climb a mountain is not going to be easy!

'Having said that, I'm incredibly excited about this challenge and with the support of my friends, family and local community I hope that we can raise valuable funds to help MRF fight meningitis and septicaemia.'

Laura-Jane, who went to sixth-form at Norwich High School for Girls, has already raised 1,980 so is hopeful of reaching her big target of 2,500.

She raised 514 as part of an MRF attempt to raise 30,000 on the streets of London over two days recently, winning the top fundraiser title out of 130 students who took part in the challenge.

Susie Bailey, fundraising officer at MRF, said: 'We are so grateful to Laura-Jane who is raising money for MRF by climbing Kilimanjaro. Meningitis and septicaemia are diseases that can leave a baby, child or adult fighting for their life within hours of the first symptoms.

'As well as helping to raise much-needed funds for our work to fight meningitis, they have also helped raise awareness of this devastating disease.'
