A GP has taken to the seas in a bid to raise cash for a Norfolk hospital.

Holt GP Victoria Holliday has completed a rowing challenge, rowing the eight miles from Wells to Blakeney in a 16ft boat, to raise money for The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn (QEH).

Alongside her were colleagues from the Blakeney Rowing Club, of which she is a founder member and a cockle boat with five rowers in it from Burnham Overy.

The challenge took place on Sunday and they managed to cover the distance in two hours.

She said: 'We got out to sea and at first it was quite calm and we thought, this is going to be a breeze, but then it did get quite rough.' She said however they were able to carry on and managed to cover the distance within two hours.

She added: 'It was fantastic, there was nothing but the sound of the waves and the seals popping their heads up.'

Dr Holliday, a non-executive Director of the QEH, hopes to raise up to 10,000 from this and other sponsored events for the hospital's 'Healthy Hearts' campaign. She is supporting the hospital's fundraising campaign as her father died young from heart disease.

The Healthy Hearts campaign was launched last year with the intention of raising 200,000 for a new diagnostic treadmill and monitoring equipment.

Ms Holliday has been rowing for 20 years since her student days at the University of Cambridge and later as a member of the Union Boat Club in Boston, Massachusetts, when she worked in the USA during the 1990's.
