Over 4,400 has been raised by a group of Norfolk girls who walked the length of Hadrian's Wall.

The team of four - remaining true to their Norfolk roots while on the 84-mile walk in northern England with the team name Boudicca's Belles - spread the walk from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway across five days.

Their aim was to raise funds and awareness for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) in memory of one of their brothers.

Abby Jeeves, from Long Stratton, lost her brother, Mark Jeeves, to MND in October 2008.

So Abby and three friends - Jess Nichols, 34, Anna Wakefield, 33, and Lucie Anya Fletcher, 33, who are all originally from Norfolk but now living elsewhere - decided to take on the famous Roman wall in memory of Mark

Abby, 38, said: 'We cooked up the idea following a night out and too many glasses of wine at Cafe Rouge in Norwich.

'Although Jess had done some hiking before, the rest of us hadn't. Anna hadn't even been camping so sleeping in a tent would be a real test for her!

'We agreed to support the MND Association as my brother had been diagnosed with this fatal disease in 2006 and was given two years to live.

'Mark was just 41 when he was diagnosed with MND, he'd had no previous illnesses, he worked very hard and was a loving husband and father of two.'

MND is a progressive neurodegenerative disease which leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.

It effects around seven in every 100,000 people. There is no known cause, diagnosis is extremely difficult and there is no cure.

So far the walk has raised over 4,490 for MNDA but the girls are hoping to reach a target of 5,000.

On day one they walked for more than 10 hours to cover 19.87 miles, from Wallsend to Harlow Hill, before almost seven hours to cover the 12.63 miles to Humshaugh on day two.

Some steep climbs meant that the 16.77 miles to Greenhead on day three took 10 hours and 25 minutes, but just short of eight hours to walk a similar distance to Crosby-on-Eden on day four.

While the final day saw the girls walk for eight hours and 51 minutes to cover the final 18.56 miles through to Bowness-on-Solway.

Abby added: 'It was an extremely tough challenge as the weather wasn't as kind as it could have been.

'We all had to dig very deep to find the energy and stamina but we all had the mental determination to complete the challenge, even though it hurt, a lot!'
