A couple from Plumstead celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary yesterday (Saturday) with a unique display in one of Norfolk's smallest venues.

An old phone box - measuring just 1m square - is the home of the heart-warming exhibition which shows photos throughout the Gibbons's life, including their wedding day at Plumstead church in 1962.

Meryvn, 81, and Eileen, 69, met in 1961 at the former Cherry Tree pub in the village and thought a display held in their hometown to commemorate their anniversary would be a 'lovely idea'.

Mrs Gibbons said looking at the work that had gone into it had brought tears to her eyes.

'It's a nice little community here,' she said.

'And we have lots of friends in the village and we thought this was a lovely idea to share our anniversary with everyone.'

The phone box was bought by the parish council for 1 to turn it into an information centre, outlining local history and information about events.

And the first event to be exhibited there was a display about the Diamond Jubilee held last month. Resident Julie Brown, who officially opened the box and maintains it, organised both displays.

The couple are also celebrating with 50 of their closest family and friends at a barbecue today (Sunday).

Mrs Gibbons, who worked at The Pigs in Edgefield for 18 years, said the secret to their long marriage was 'to give and take'.

A retired land-worker, Mr Gibbons said their success was down to 'never having an argument' and also resolving any disagreements.

The couple have two sons - Martin and Neville - and two granddaughters.
