Two charities have benefited from mounds of donations thanks to the innovative idea of a company worker.

David Young, who works for DHL in Thetford, collected more than 20 bags each for the British Heart Foundation and Barnardo's in the town, as well as a pallet each of furniture and electrical items.

It came after he decided to place a charity collection box at his Burrell Way office, in a bid for staff to bring in items they wished to donate - this included clothes, computers and even a trampoline.

The company also donated furniture following a refurbishment.

Mr Young, 33, a night shift supervisor with a role in corporate and social responsibility, said: 'It was an idea that came to me because we've all got bits and pieces lying around but don't do anything with them and I thought people were coming to work anyway so why not bring it with them.'

The items were delivered to the British Heart Foundation, which has two shops in Thetford, and Barnardo's, which has a warehouse in the town. The collection box, set up at the beginning of August, will continue into next year.

'The British Heart Foundation was over the moon when I visited the store and I spoke to the Barnardo's manager and they're both really keen on this relationship,' Mr Young added.
