Hundreds of families flocked to a city shopping centre to see a children's television favourite turn on the Christmas lights.

Peppa Pig and her younger brother George were the star attractions at the Mall Norwich lights switch-on this evening.

Crowds lined the balcony and filled the floor, welcoming the popular pair with loud cheers when they appeared on stage with Father Christmas.

Big bangs, sparkles and the sound of Wizzard's 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday' then filled the shopping centre as the lights were switched on.

Hairdresser Becca Smith from Sprowston, who was with her three-year-old daughter Aimee, waited from 4pm for the 6.40pm switch-on.

She said: 'It was worth the wait, Aimee loves Peppa Pig. I come to the Christmas lights switch-on in the Mall every year.'

Michelle Barr, 25, who lives in Queen's Hills, Costessey, was with her three-year-old Riley. She said: 'He really enjoyed it. He loves Peppa Pig and managed to squeeze in to catch a glimpse of her.

'The lights make it more Christmassy, special and exciting.'

Before Heart FM presenter Toby Anstis led the countdown for the switching on of the lights, local singers Destiny Duo, otherwise known as Norwich husband and wife Matthew and Vanessa May, performed.

Other festive entertainment included choirs and singing groups, face painting for children and an appearance from Andre Vincent, star of this year's Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime Aladdin.

The main Norwich lights switch-on will be held on November 22.
