A Sainsbury's superstore is poised to create up to 350 jobs in Gorleston, after the scheme got the green light.

Great Yarmouth Borough councillors voted unanimously in favour of the proposed new retail park at Beacon Park.

And at yesterday's planning meeting store bosses welcomed the decision.

Robert Oxley, development executive for Sainsbury's, said: 'We have been working hard on our proposals for Beacon Park and are absolutely delighted with the committee's decision.

'We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters who have been vocal in their desire to see greater shopping choice and more job opportunities for Gorleston.

'We'll continue to keep the community up to date with the progress of our new store and can't wait to play an integral role within it with our initiatives like Active Kids and Local Charity of the Year.'

Recruitment for the 350 full- and part-time jobs will focus on the immediate vicinity of the store, with bosses hopeful that around 90pc of employees will live within a mile of the store.

The store will be complemented by a petrol station, four additional shop units, 550-space car park and paves the way for a link road from the A12 to the A143 near Belton.
