A charity has launched an urgent appeal to help 'struggling' fishermen across Lowestoft and Southwold, whose livelihoods have been affected by the recent storm surge.

The Fishermen's Mission has launched a nationwide appeal for emergency funds to aid fishermen in coastal communities who have been unable to land any catches, as they suffer the full impact of the severe storms.

The Mission, which provides support for fishermen and their families, is calling on people to donate.

As well as raising money to help those still bringing in a catch, it offers financial and pastoral aid to the families and widows of fishermen.

Senior superintendent Tim Jenkins, port missioner for East Anglia, said this appeal was 'a national first,' but the Mission would support fishermen across Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.

Emergency grants of up to £500 are being made available to fishermen who are in need.

In north Norfolk Cromer crab fisherman John Lee said it was difficult to tell how the weather had affected the crab season but was concerned about the impact of wind farms which were reducing the amount of space in which they could fish.
