People across the community are being encouraged to get out in their gardens and create some blooming marvellous displays as Norwich's summer and schools horticultural competitions are launched.
Individuals, schools, businesses and other organisations can all take part in the annual event that the Friends of Norwich in Bloom is running in partnership with Notcutts Garden Centre. Today both the summer and schools competitions were launched at Notcutts, in Daniels Road, by the Lord Mayor of Norwich, Keith Driver, and Notcutts manager Steve Boon.
Mr Driver and Mr Boon also judged the Friends of Norwich in Bloom's school daffodil competition - Chapel Break Infant School was crowned the winner, while George White Junior School was awarded second prize, and Magdalen Gates Preschool was given third prize.
Julie Brociek-Coulton, the Friends secretary and competition organiser, said they hoped it would be a bumper year for entries in all competition categories and appealed for as many people as possible to get involved. She also thanked Notcutts for sponsoring the competitions.
She said: 'As this year is the 50th anniversary of the Royal Horticultural Society we are hoping that lots of schools and residents will take part in our competition. We usually have around 22 schools take part and 50 residents, and we are really looking forward to seeing the fantastic displays and the different ways of working.'
This year the schools competition categories are: floral containers, conservation garden, fruit and vegetable garden, scarecrow, sunflower, giant pumpkin, and all year round diary of gardening activities.
In the summer competition there are a number of categories in the following sections: commercial and industrial; private residential; grow your own; heritage; sustainable display; Notcutts sponsor premier awards.
