Armed with bin bags, rubber gloves and oodles of goodwill, campaigners for a city wood held a spring clean litter pick recently to tidy up the historic area.

In two hours, around 15 people collected 19 bags of rubbish from Train Wood - based at the start of Marriott's Way near Barn Road roundabout - in Norwich.

They removed bulky items including two supermarket trolleys and also a large bale of wire, a small grill and even a tiny red train.

Co-organiser Lucy Galvin, of campaign group Friends of Train Wood, said: 'We've been asked by local residents to make this a regular event and we'll be reviewing the request at our management committee as there is a lot of support and people willing to muck in and help keep the wood beautiful.

'As well as lots of rubbish, we saw kingfishers, toads, spring flowers and robins.'

Train Wood forms the start of Marriott's Way Norfolk Trail and was formerly the home of the City Station, which saw the last train leave in the late 1960s.

Train Wood was put up for sale by the previous Conservative administration at Norfolk County Council (NCC), which said they needed to raise money through selling off council-owned assets.

But, following the May 2013 elections, which led to Labour and the Liberal Democrats forming an administration, the council has changed tack and invited community groups to take up a peppercorn lease.

Friends of Train Wood was formed to prevent the sell-off of the area and is at present negotiating to ensure it stays open to the public as a local resource.

The group has been campaigning to keep the site, on the banks of the River Wensum, in public ownership since 2012.

A spokesman from NCC said: 'We invited expressions of interest last year from groups and organisations interested in taking on a 'peppercorn' lease for the Train Wood site. The Friends of Train Wood came forward and we're currently discussing terms with them with a view to coming to an agreement.'
