It is a day aimed at advancing the lives of young girls around the world and now two doctors from the University of East Anglia are calling on more people to get involved.

The International Day of the Girl is a global event supported annually by the United Nations and the duo who heads up the Norwich branch have created a new web network to keep the support going.

Working with schools, colleges, community and youth groups across the county, organisers Sarah Godfrey, a lecturer in film and tv, and Tori Cann, a PhD student, have been supporting the event since it began in 2011.

And this year they have launched GirlsRoar, which sees girls from across the region going online to share their experiences of being a girl in Norfolk and collaborating and sharing their ideas for future projects.

Ms Godfrey said: 'We invite all kinds of contributions from young people. These don't have to be written but can be art work, photographs, films. It may be reviews of films, books or similar and they can be individual or collective. The aim, as with the rest of the project, is to make it about what the contributors see as being important.

'GirlsRoar will also harness social media in order to create connections between people and will form a platform for the discussion about girls' issues both here and abroad.

'We have also launched GirlsRoar on Twitter in the hopes of raising the profile of these discussions.'

Ms Cann added: 'We work with toddlers to older girls but we also want to encourage teachers, careers, boys and other groups to get involved.

'GirlsRoar gives girls a space to talk about their own issues that they face and also leads them to discuss the issues further from the activities we put on.

'Putting the network together has been a lot of hard work but we get so much out of doing it and get as much back as we put in.'

The International Day of the Girl takes place on October 11 and will be celebrating its third year in Norwich this year.
