A day to mark the centenary of the First World War will take place in Cromer with a service of acknowledgement and an evening concert.

The day on August 4 will begin at 11am when the public has been invited to gather at the War Memorial at the parish church to hear a service led by the Rt Rev Jonathan Meyrick, the Bishop of Lynn, and the Rev Peter Herbate, curate at the church.

Local military organisations and other groups have been invited to take part and hear the roll-call of the local men who died in the First World War.

After a two-minute silence, those present will be invited into the church where a candle of remembrance will be lit by Bishop Jonathan, to be guarded for eight hours by a single guard of honour, changing each hour.

At 7.30pm a centenary concert will take place at the church where the the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band will perform and Broadland Youth Choir will sing a selection of songs.

Baroness Shepherd of Northwold, who was MP for South West Norfolk, will read some poems from the First World War period.

It is hoped a descendant of a man named on the memorial will extinguish the candle.

Tickets are £5 from Cromer Town Council offices at North Lodge on 01263 512254.
