A moving tribute to the fallen of World War One brought lumps to the throats of crowds ogling the annual November firework spectacular at Walcott's Lighthouse Inn last night.

Some 2,000 flocked to the pub to watch one of the biggest events in the county, outside Norwich.

This year featured two displays, with the first marking the centenary of the outbreak of the 1914-1918 war.

During the tribute, fireworks spelt out the words 'Lest We Forget' in the sky and then rained a sea of sparkling red poppies as the Last Post played.

'People found it very moving and emotional,' said Lighthouse Inn landlord Steve Bullimore.

The second display included music from The Last Night of the Proms and ended with The National Anthem.

Numbers attending the event had been down on last year, because of wet and squally weather earlier in the day, Mr Bullimore added.

But he was delighted at the feedback from those who did brave the conditions to enjoy £16,000 of fireworks, masterminded by Norfolk firm Premiere Fireworks, based in Great Massingham.

'The comments on Facebook have been really good,' he said.

'People book holidays for the weekend to come here and see the display and we get coaches coming from Norwich. I also like to do it for the people of Walcott to enjoy.'

Mr Bullimore has organised a display on each of the 26 years he has been at The Lighthouse and said it had grown every year.

'When we began it was just garden fireworks and about 30 people came to see them,' he said. 'It's now our biggest event of the year.'
