A vehicle recovery business owner has launched a petition to help keep the industry safer.

Andre Smith, of Campion Way in Hethersett, opened Smith's Rescue and Recovery after leaving his former job working in parking enforcement.

Now, the 26-year-old is hoping to keep the recovery industry safer by campaigning for a change in the law, which will allow drivers to use red rear lights when they attend an incident.

Currently, the law states that drivers should use an amber flashing light - which the father-of-three said isn't enough.

'Red is the international colour for danger and people slow down and take more care when they see it.

'The amber lights are used on lots of types of vehicles and don't have the same impact.

'Deaths of recovery drivers while out on jobs is very high and it's something that can be changed,' he said.

With more than 430 signatures so far, it's clear that other recovery drivers feel the same.

Despite having only been in business a few months, Mr Smith said he already has plans to expand.

He currently has one truck, but plans to grow his fleet and eventually open his own yard.

And whether stranded drivers are in need of a jump start or a full once-over, the business owner promised he can offer a competitive alternative to the mainstream recovery companies.
