About 5,000 homes and businesses south of Norwich are still relying on bowsers for water today due to a burst water main.

The water went off at about 11am yesterday and Anglian Water engineers have been working throughout the night to fix the burst pipe.

Areas affected include Caistor St Edmund, Poringland, Framingham Earl, Mundham, Newton Flotman, Hempnall, Hardwick and Postwick.

An Anglian Water spokesman said: 'Unfortunately we've run into further complications as we tried to recharge the main. We think this will set us back by at least four hours.

'We're also working on another solution, and if that's successful we'd expect supplies to start returning in the morning.

'So, our advice remains the same – where possible, please collect any water you'll need overnight and for tomorrow morning.

'Apologies once again, we know this isn't what you'd hope to hear at this point but we are still doing everything possible to fix this, despite this setback.'

A bottled water bank was set up at Poringland Community Centre this morning, and this afternoon a further supply of bottled water is available at Poringland Primary School. People are being asked to park at the nearby football club and walk to the school.

There are also 14 water bowsers for people to collect water from in the NR14 and NR15 areas and some water box locations, and Anglian Water has said these will continue to be filled throughout the day.

Ms Staples also said Anglian Water was planning to make water deliveries to vulnerable customers on its WaterCare Register.

She said people who were not on the WaterCare Register but were unable to collect water should call Anglian Water on 0345 7145145.
