Actor Stephen Fry has announced he has married his partner Elliott Spencer at a ceremony in Dereham.

Mr Fry, 57, tweeted to his more than 8m followers on the social network Twitter:

'Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing.'

Mr Spencer, a comedian, was quick to 'retweet' the message himself along with a picture of the happy couple signing the civil register.

Within half an hour, the announcement had been 'retweeted' almost 2,000 times and 'favourited' by more than 6,000 people.

He went on to tweet a picture of a doll of the writer Oscar Wilde witnessing the signing of the register:

They tied the knot at Dereham's register office at the Breckland Business Centre .

Earlier, he indicated he would be watching Norwich City take on Cardiff City today, and the announcement was tweeted minutes after the final whistle at the Carrow Road game. However, it is not clear if he did attend the game, which resulted in a 3-2 victory for the Canaries.

Mr Fry is a director of the club and is a regular at matches.

He had confirmed his engagement to Mr Spencer, 27, on January 6.

At the time he said he had hoped to keep the wedding a secret but was 'deeply touched' by the reaction of his fans.

The actor rose to fame as part of a double act with Hugh Laurie and they worked together in A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster and Blackadder.

Mr Laurie tweeted: 'Bloody hell it's happened! @ElliottGSpencer has made an honest man of m'col. Love and happiness to all!!'

He has since gone on to star in films such as The Hobbit trilogy, Sherlock Holmes and V for Vendetta.

Mr Fry grew up near Reepham, attending City College Norwich, and chose to marry in the county where he has spent much of his life.
