A body found in Orford Ness at the weekend has been identified as 85-year-old Norman Carter, who had gone missing from Westerfield earlier this month.

Mr Carter had been reported missing since Monday, September 14, after he failed to return home in Westerfield following work at his printing business Norman Press in Cauldwell Hall Road, Ipswich.

Police were called shortly before 11am on Sunday by the National Trust who reported discovering a body on the beach.

A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday afternoon, although further tests will be carried out to determine the cause of his death.

Further work was carried out today, and confirmed the identity of the man as Mr Carter.

Investigating officers are not treating his death as suspicious.

Mr Carter spent three years in the Royal Air Force after the Second World War and his father fought in the First World War with the army.

On Saturday, Mr Carter's family said that he would often become emotional around times of commemoration of the Second World War.

A file will now be prepared for the coroner, with an inquest due to be opened in due course.
